Home of the Colorado Rockies

Every Broncos game since the mid '70s has sold out, so scoring football tickets is a moot point for out-of-towners who most likely won't hang around for the Sunday games anyway.

But seats for the Rockies, Avalanche and Nuggets are usually easy to obtain -- except in those rare instances when the teams are in a hot playoff run.

The Rockies suffered a humiliating World Series shutout to the Boston Red Sox in 2007, but not before an impressive winning streak in which they became the first team in history to sweep both the division series and league championship series. That recent success is bound to raise ticket prices and fill seats, but a game in Coors field is a great way to enjoy Denver in the spring, summer and early fall.

Moving to Denver from Quebec in 1995, the Avalanche were the only team to win the Stanley Cup the first season after their relocation. The team recaptured the cup again in 2001 and also captured eight division titles and went to the playoffs each of their first 10 seasons in Denver.

The NBA's Nuggets are Denver's perennial underdogs, and the only major- league sports team in the Mile High City not to win a division championship. But that may change sometime.

One of the Denver area's most famous attractions, the otherworldly rock formations at Morrison's Red Rocks Park are worth exploring. But the site is probably most famous for its amphitheater, which has everyone from the Beatles and Bruce Springsteen. The venue's concert season runs from May until October and Red Rocks' 2009 schedule included Mark Knopfler, Rush, John Prine and Emmylou Harris. But even if you stop by sometime when there isn't a concert, try uploading an MP3 of U2's “Under the Blood Red Sky (recorded at Red Rocks circa 1983) on your iPod, sit back in the middle of row 15 and imagine what might have been if you were actually there.
